ABOUT:
This is not your average coming-of-age story but an important one to tell. Meet Daje Shelton, a 17-year-old girl who finds herself in a court-supervised alternative high school. Although she is focused on making a better future, she finds her focus drawn back to her rough St. Louis neighborhood and the loss of friends to gun violence. The all-too-familiar fate of black teenagers is underlined when Daje gives birth to a baby boy she names Akeem. He comes to represent the strength, resilience, and determination it takes to survive.
